Assault charge pending against man shot by deputy

A man authorities say pointed a gun at a deputy early Friday and was shot in the process will likely be charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, Houston police said in a news release about the incident.

The shooting occurred in the 18100 block of McKay at about 8 a.m. as local and federal law enforcement officers from a multi-agency task force attempted to arrest Jeremy Perkins, 32, on a federal narcotics warrant.

Perkins suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital for treatment. Harris County Deputy Bobby Brown, the officer who allegedly shot Perkins, was not injured.

HPD Homicide Division Sgt. R. Chandler and senior police officer K. Carr said Perkins fled into a wooded lot on McKay when officers attempted to take him into custody.

Authorities knew Perkins carried a firearm and had recently made threats about any officers who might try to arrest him. When Brown encountered Perkins in the woods, he said a pistol was in Perkins's hand.

Chandler and Carr wrote in their reports that Brown commanded Perkins to drop the gun, but Perkins refused and instead threatened Brown and pointed his gun at the deputy.

“Deputy Brown, fearing for his safety, discharged his duty weapon at least one time, striking the suspect,” the detectives said.

Officer-involved shootings in the city limits are routinely investigated by the HPD Homicide Division and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
