Students help restore sand dunes
The following information comes from Humble ISD:
Student councils from Atascocita, Kingwood Park and Kingwood High Schools recently participated in a Save the Beach restoration project at Surfside.
The project was sponsored by the Save Our Beaches organization, and students arrived with gloves and hammers to help restore sand dunes destroyed by Hurricane Ike.
The project consisted of anchoring used Christmas trees to the beach. The trees will help to capture windblown sand and help the sand dunes reform. The students participated by dragging the trees into two long lines. Then they followed up by staking and anchoring them to the beach. Sand will be added to the trees by mechanical means and by wind and wave action.
We had to wake up really early for a Saturday morning, but it felt good to help out Surfside," Lindsey Landgrover, a Kingwood High School senior, said.
Atascocita High School students had participated in November as well and enjoyed seeing the results of their earlier efforts. We had planted grasses in November and we saw where they had anchored into the beach and were holding sand," Atascocita High School junior Tori Thompson said.
