In preparation for the March Mart at Mercer Arboretum & Botanic Gardens, a Kingwood couple spends hundreds of hours a year making sure plants are correctly identified with botanical and common names as well as optimum growing conditions.

Kingwood High grad Josh Pastner, head coach of the University of Memphis basketball team, took an extremely hard punch Wednesday night. The Houston Cougars mowed down the Tigers 92-75 at Hofheinz Pavilion.

State wildlife experts are reporting that river otters are making a comeback in parts of Texas where they have not been seen for years. And reports of sightings in the Lake Houston area have been surfacing in recent weeks.

There’s a slumber party vibe in the Hoopnotica class that Sheri Morris teaches at Ekam Yoga in Atascocita. Eight women – college age to middle age to retired – are in various stages of keeping a hula hoop in motion, and giggling good naturedly about themselves, and at each other’s efforts is part of the fun.

Students log plenty of long hours during Humble’s annual livestock show and rodeo that wrapped up last weekend. But what about parents? Philip and Debbie Bryant, whose son Gregory, 18, is a senior at Kingwood Park, have helped other Future Farmers of America parents run concessions at the rodeo for four years.

In the Kingwood area, and all over the world, an outpouring of concern about the devastation in Haiti has sparked fundraising, donations and prayers. For Kingwood resident Julie Halecki, the prayers and good wishes for people in Haiti are less abstract and won’t diminish over time. Her parents, Sherry and Bobby Burnette, have been in the thick of the crisis since the earthquake tore the country apart Jan. 12.
