Humble Independent School District is seeking a sponsor to fund a residential wind turbine at its new elementary school, a building with an energy-themed curriculum.
The 30-foot residential turbine would cost $40,000 for equipment and installation, said assistant superintendent Martha Buckner.
Students throughout Humble ISD, through the Internet, would benefit from the turbine, according to a district news release.
The new elementary, referred to as Elementary 26 (it will be named soon), will sit on Valley Lodge Drive and hold 950 students, Buckner said.
The main hallway will introduce children’s museum concepts into the school through touch screens, where kids will be able to monitor the building’s electricity use, and interchangeable exhibits featuring pulleys and other simple machines.
The school also will feature a rainwater collection system and solar panels.
Wind power is the fastest growing renewable energy technology, and three of the five largest wind farms in the nation are in Texas, according to the release.
Those interested in sponsoring the wind turbine should contact Jerri Monbaron,
Humble ISD's competitive grants coordinator, at 281-641-8143.
