Colorectal Cancer Seminar scheduled for March 22 at Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital

An expert panel of physicians from the Memorial Hermann Cancer Center-Northeast will present a free colorectal cancer seminar on Monday, March 22, 6 to 7:30 pm, at the Hospital’s Classrooms A & B.Enter through the Hospital’s West Entrance.
The public is invited to attend.

Members of the panel include:
•Parendra Banker, M.D., Gastroenterologist
•Richard Baltz, M.D., Medical Oncologist
•Jose Ortega, M.D., Surgeon
•Majid Mohiuddin, Radiation Oncologist

The panel will provide life-saving information about the disease – from prevention through diagnosis, treatment and beyond. Persons aged 50 and older should be concerned about colorectal cancer which is second only to lung cancer in the number of cancer deaths for men and women combined. However, the panel will discuss how colorectal cancer can be treated as well as prevented.

Free take-home colorectal cancer screening kits will be distributed to participants.

Bariatric Seminars Scheduled on the Third Wednesday of Every Month

If you are considering weight loss surgery and want to learn more about it, you are invited to attend the monthly Bariatric seminar information sessions held at Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital.

Surgeon Jose Ortega, MD, is available to discuss the different aspects of weight loss surgery including nutrition, health and fitness, lifestyle modification and other health related topics.

Seminars on Bariatric surgery are held on the third Wednesday of each month from 6 to 7 pm in the Hospital’s Classrooms A&B. Enter through the Hospital’s West Entrance.

Sessions are free but you must call to reserve a spot. Call 281.540.7319.

Cancer Center Support Groups

The Memorial Hermann Cancer Center - Northeast sponsors three support groups for cancer patients and their families:

•General Cancer Support Group – 1st and 3rd Tuesday night of each month, 7 to 8.30 pm at the Memorial Hermann Cancer Center Northeast. Sponsored by Cancer Counseling and facilitated by Mary Frances Heep, LCSW.
•Look Good…Feel Better – a free public service program for female cancer patients sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Call for the schedule.
•Breast Cancer Support Group – Every other Thursday at the Cancer Center, 6.30 to 8 pm at the Memorial Hermann Cancer Center Northeast.

Women’s Center Programs

The Women’s Center at Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital sponsors several programs for expectant parents and their support persons.
•Women’s Unit Tour – Expectant parents and support persons are invited to take a free tour of the Women’s Center. Learn more about the facility’s mother-baby nursing care and the state-of-the-art birthing suites.
•Prepared Childbirth Class – This class provides the latest information on what to expect during childbirth.
•Infant Care Class – This is a guide to help prepare parents and potential caregivers to care for a newborn. It provides information on bathing, feeding, skin care and more.
•Breastfeeding Class – This two-hour class is appropriate for both pregnant women and those who have already delivered. It offers the most current information on nutrition and breastfeeding techniques.
•Sibling Class – A fun and informative one-hour class to prepare children ages 3 to 10 years old for the upcoming birth of a new baby brother or sister. A cookie and juice snack is provided.
•Infant Care – This one-hour class is designed to teach CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) to any person responsible for the care of an infant. This course it not intended to certification.
