Volunteers are needed in the area

For more information on the following volunteer opportunities, please call Volunteer Houston at 713-965-0031, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional opportunities can be found at www.volunteerhouston.org.

WOMAN HELPING WOMEN is what a new mentorship initiative is all about in a chemical dependency recovery program at a correctional facility in Atascocita. These mentors will receive in-depth training equipping them to provide the moral and emotional support needed to facilitate the reentry of incarcerated moms into society as productive citizens and capable parents. This important assignment calls for volunteers willing to commit 8 to 10 hours a week for a period of one year.

A SYMPATHETIC EAR will serve you well as a volunteer interviewer for a Humble social service agency that helps families experiencing economic hardship. If you can commit three hours a week on the weekday of your choice, training will equip you to assess clients’ needs and, when appropriate, authorize tangible assistance with food, clothing, or financial aid. The main requirements for this assignment are sound judgment and good interpersonal skills.

CREATE BLANKETS for infants and small children. An all-volunteer organization is looking for persons willing to make the blankets for seriously ill or traumatized youngsters, including pediatric cancer patients. They may be sewn, woven, crocheted, knitted, or quilted, and size doesn't matter. You can do the work at home and on your own schedule, and the amount you make is wholly up to you.

NICE NAILS can enhance the morale of female senior citizens at a nursing home in Humble. If you have a steady hand and a good rapport with older folks, plan on stopping by a couple of weekday mornings or afternoons a month to polish the nails of a few of these special ladies. Your service and good company is sure to do a lot to keep their spirits bright. Staff will be happy to furnish you with any needed supplies.
