FIGHT HUNGER by participating the weekend of February 6-7 in the "Souper Bowl of Caring"— expected to be the largest food drive ever held in the greater Houston area. The work will be easy: you'll staff a food donation station at a participating grocery store in your area and answer questions posed by potential donors. Shifts will last about two hours. Assignments are available at numerous locations in Kingwood, Humble, and adjoining areas.
SEW DOG COLLARS for an all-volunteer animal welfare organization in Kingwood. Sale of these collars helps support the organization’s work which includes arranging foster homes and adoption services for dogs. If you’re handy with a sewing machine, you can set your own schedule for making as many collars as you feel up to, and you’ll be able to exercise a fair amount of creative whimsy in the work. The needed materials, including connectors, will be provided.
READ ALOUD to a small group of residents at an nursing home in Humble. If you have a clear reading voice, plan on coming by to help stimulate residents' minds and keep their spirits bright. Material read can include inspirational passages, Bible study selections, poems, or pieces chosen for their entertainment value. Your visits can take place on weekdays or weekends, during the morning or afternoon.
BE A TRAIL GUIDE at an environmental learning center south of Kingwood. Leading school groups, scout troops, and other groups around the grounds, you’ll point out interesting flora and fauna, and explain how the local ecology is impacted by human activity. You’ll receive training from persons with expertise on environmental issues and habitats typical to our area of the state. Volunteer shifts can be arranged for weekdays or weekends.
